AUSKF 2008 IAIDÔ CAMP DIRECTIONS

Registrants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Iaidô camp. The camp is on the campus of Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania.  Bryn Mawr is 11 miles west of Philadelphia on what was known in the age of railroads as the Pennsylvania RR Main Line but now is better known as US30.

Flying

If you have not already made your flight arrangements, please do so as early as possible to get the best airfare and convenient flights.  The nearest airport is the Philadelphia Airport (PHL).  But, if you cannot get a flight to Philadelphia a second choice is Liberty Airport Newark New Jersey (EWR). Philadelphia Airport is about 30 minutes from the school.  Newark is about 1 ½ hour drive.  Taxi’s and car service are available at the Philadelphia airport.  Also it is possible to take a train from the both airports to Bryn Mawr, see next section.

Train

You can take a train (SEPTA) to within 3 blocks of the college.  There is SEPTA service R1 from the Philadelphia Airport. A simple change at 30th St Station to R5 line takes you to Bryn Mawr.

There is also a transfer from the New Jersey Transit (NJT) trains in Trenton NJ to SEPTA R7 trains which take you to 30th St Station where you take the R5 to Bryn Mawr.  The NJT train has a direct connection from Liberty Airport in Newark via the airport monorail as well as service from Penn Station New York City.  It is also possible to connect to SEPTA from Amtrack service to Philadelphia.

Driving

For those driving the school is just off US30 11 miles west of Philadelphia.  Easy access is from the beltway around Philadelphia. I-476.  This connects with I-95 coming from the south, and with the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-76,coming from Pittsburg and the west, from the north on I-476 the NE Extension PA Turnpike starts at Scranton PA where it connects to I-81 from upstate NY, or from the east I-276 connects to New Jersey Turnpike and New York City and New England.

Getting Closer

Once you are on the Beltway, I-476, exit at US30 and turn east on US30 towards Villanova.  After a couple traffic lights you will be surrounded by Villanova University.  The football stadium will be on your left.  Continue on US30, you will pass thru a small residential area mostly apartments as you go down a small hill.  As you come up that hill, you are in the business district of Bryn Mawr.  Continue on US30 and after a few traffic lights you will see a small park/parking lot on your left that is Bryn Mawr Station on the SEPTA line.  Just pass that parking area turn left at the light onto N. Morris Ave.  Go straight and the road will go under the tracks and makes a sharp turn to the left and then a sharp right turn.  You are still on N. Morris Ave.  Immediately you hit a traffic light at Montgomery Ave.  Continue straight across Montgomery Ave (use middle lane) and take the next left, Yarrow St. into Bryn Mawr College.  Go to the stop sign and turn right onto N. Merion Ave.  About half way down the block on your left is the PEMBROKE ARCH which passes under Pembroke Dorms.  This is just past the crosswalk.  Park, your there.  That is where you check in to receive your room assignments and keys and meal cards etc.

From Philadelphia on US30

Coming west on US30 from Philadelphia is not the easiest way since US30 makes several changes in direction as it goes through Philadelphia.  But, if you are coming west on US30, then watch for a Staples on your right after you have entered Bryn Mawr.  Turn right at the next light onto N. Morris Ave and follow the directions above..

Hotel

This recommended hotel choice is to use the Best Western Hotel in King of Prussia PA.  Their rate for the AUSKF comes to about $115/night and includes taxes.  There is a comp. breakfast every morning.  But remember, staying off campus will require a day pass to use the BMC facilities.  To keep it simple, this pass also comes with a lunch ticket for $25/day or $100 for the entire camp.   This must be paid to the AUSKF on the seminar application form.

The hotel expenses are the responsibility person using the hotel..  So the combined total for staying in the hotel is $140 plus the cost of dinner each night.  By sharing with 4 in s room the cost is reduced to $82.50.day plus the cost of dinner.

Directions to the Hotel Directly

The hotel is located near the Valley Forge National Monument exit on the PA Turnpike.  Upon Exiting from Turnpike, follow the signs for the Schuykill Expressway I-76 toward Philadelphia.  Very quickly US202 crosses the Schuyskill.  Follow the signs for US202 east and almost immediately you can exit right onto, PA320, S, Gulph Road, aka Montgomery Ave, The Best Western should appear almost immediately.

Hotel to Bryn Mawr College

Directions to go from the hotel to the BMC gym, turn east on PA320 follow it to Spring Mill Rd.  PA320 turns right, but continue straight on Montgomery Ave. Follow Montgomery Ave about 1 to 2 miles to Roberts Road.  Robert road has a traffic light and does not cross Montgomery Ave.  So it is only possible to turn left onto  Roberts Road.  Follow Roberts a short distance to the next traffic signal at Old Gulph Road (BMC is on your right).  Turn right onto Old Gulph Road then immediately turn right again into parking lot for gym.   Gym is down the hill on right.
